Smiles and laughter filled the air Thursday as hundreds of Wilson County’s older adults were celebrated in a big way.

The Wilson County Department of Social Services held its 29th annual Senior Awareness Expo at the agency. This year’s expo was a drive-thru event again due to COVID-19.

Sandra Perry said she was grateful to all those who made Thursday possible. She waved and smiled to all volunteers as she drove through the line.

“Just to see somebody appreciate us seniors ... I think it’s just wonderful,” Perry said.

DSS workers and community partners gave seniors and disabled adults free thank-you bags filled with various items. The first 250 participants received a free meal. Door prizes and gift cards were also given away. DSS employees and volunteers cheered as seniors drove through the marked-off area.

Wilson County DSS Director Glenn Osborne said the expo is a way to recognize seniors for the many contributions they have made over the years.

“They’ve paved the way for the rest of us,” he said. “I’m just so appreciative of all their contributions to the betterment of our county. What better way to have this event to celebrate them and their lives?”

May is Older Americans Month. This year’s theme is “Age My Way.” Officials said the special recognition provides an opportunity for everyone to explore the many ways older adults can remain in and be involved with their communities.

“These are our seniors, and they’re the ones who built the foundation here in Wilson County,” said Nancy Sallenger, DSS board member and Wilson Crisis Center executive director. She said seniors are giving and loving people who deserve to be celebrated.

“They spread their joy and kindness,” Sallenger said. “We don’t look at the years. That has nothing to do with it. They are young at heart.”

Wilson Mayor Carlton Stevens, Wilson County Sheriff Calvin Woodard and county Commissioner JoAnne Daniels, who also is vice chair of the DSS board helped hand out goodie bags and spread cheer.
