Two Wilson college students were awarded scholarships this week in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

John Christian “J.C.” Newkirk received a $1,000 scholarship Monday from Barton College.

“Truly, John Christian represents the best of Barton College, and he ultimately represents the values, the legacy and the great work of Dr. King,” said Barton College President Doug Searcy.

Newkirk is a senior from Clayton studying biology and psychology while serving as an active leader on campus. He said he plans to use the scholarship to help pay for medical school.

Wilson Community College awarded $500 to Kendrell Hunt in the civil rights leader’s honor. Hunt started the business administration degree program in the fall.

“Kendrell is an avid learner. He is truly a pleasure to teach,” said instructor Wendy Grode. “He engaged with his classmates in the discussion forums and provides real-life examples of the impact of business law in his personal and professional life.”
