A Wilson Academy of Applied Technology student has earned a scholarship awarded in memory of a WAAT student who was killed a year ago.

The Trinity Williams Foundation gave WAAT student Taylor King a $1,000 scholarship in Williams’ honor.

Williams’ mother, Jackie Williams, established the special scholarship in honor of her daughter and to keep her name alive with the school’s help. Organizers said Jackie Williams raised the money with support from local businesses, the school and the community.

The 19-year-old was killed on May 5, 2021, between the Westview Lanes bowling alley and Sammy’s Convenient Mart in Wilson. Williams would have graduated from WAAT, a five-year early college, this year.

The school will pick a deserving student for the scholarship every year. Contributors can donate through an online crowdfunding page. Organizers say all proceeds will go toward the Trinity Williams Foundation.
