Police say a Wilson man confessed to fatally stabbing a 38-year-old woman Friday afternoon.

Officers were called to the intersection of Dewey and Sauls streets at 12:38 p.m. and found Wilson resident Lavonda M. Lucas suffering from stab wounds to the chest, Wilson Police Department spokesman Capt. Steve Stroud said.

Medics took Lucas to Wilson Medical Center. She was transferred to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville for trauma care. Police say Lucas died from her injuries.

Officers found 52-year-old Steven Thor Cameron while canvassing the area. Cameron “stated he was the person who stabbed Lucas,” Stroud wrote in a Friday night news release, adding that Cameron had a visible cut on his hand.

Police arrested Cameron on an open count of murder after further investigation, Stroud said.

Cameron was released from prison in October 2020 after serving an 11-month sentence on a second-degree burglary conviction in Wilson County, according to N.C. Department of Public Safety records.

He received probation on a 2006 misdemeanor larceny conviction after a one-month stint in prison on 2005 common-law uttering and common-law forgery charges. A misdemeanor larceny conviction in 1999 earned Cameron a three-month sentence following six months in prison on 1998 convictions of felony breaking and entering and misdemeanor larceny.

Two larceny convictions in 1996 resulted in an intermediate punishment.

Cameron was booked into the Wilson County Detention Center after appearing before a magistrate Friday night. His bond amount was not immediately available.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call the Wilson Police Department at 252-399-2323 or Crime Stoppers at 252-243-2255.
