Group 7/27, a hip-hop duo with eastern North Carolina ties, has released a music video featuring familiar scenes from Wilson, Rocky Mount and Raleigh.

The video for “High Vibes,” the second single on the group’s 2020 mixtape, “Cycles,” shows Kiara Allen grooving and rapping outside Wilson’s Rockstars & Flowers gallery on Nash Street. Other scenes show the Thelonious Monk mural in Rocky Mount and artist Sean Kernick’s Carolina Hurricanes-inspired “Take Warning” mural in downtown Raleigh.

“The meaning behind the title and song is to lift your vibration through being positive,” Allen explained in an email to The Wilson Times.

The 1-minute, 45-second “High Vibes” video premiered on Allen’s YouTube channel late last month and had 173 views as of Wednesday.

Group 7/27 samples a beat from De La Soul and a tune from jazz musician Ahamad Jamal on the track, which also includes a quotation from Miles Davis.

“We have been doing music now for 11 years as a group, and most of our topics are about life and real issues,” Allen wrote. “We make positive content to uplift people.”

Allen said the duo’s name is a combination of her and her partner’s birthdays.

Group 7/27 will perform in Sampson County for the third annual Unity in the Community Day, planned from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Royal Lane Park in Clinton. Nine other bands will take the stage during the free community festival.
