Speed may have been a factor in a fatal Monday wreck on Interstate 95.

Andre G. Moore, 21, of Eastover, died in the single-vehicle wreck reported at 8:41 a.m. on I-95 North near mile marker 115.5. The crash site is near the highway’s intersection with N.C. 42 west of Wilson.

According to N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper C. Goulet, who investigated the crash, eyewitnesses said Moore’s 2018 Honda Civic was traveling more than 100 mph when it ran off the left side of the road and struck a pine tree.

Moore was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Goulet said Moore was the only person in the car. 

“He was passing people kind of erratically. He came up behind them fast, and they had to move over for him,” Goulet said. 

Goulet said the crash knocked the engine out of the car. 

“If he was going the speed they said he was going, it makes sense,” Goulet said. “The engine actually separated from the vehicle. The tree pretty much took out the front end and peeled the passenger compartment open, and that’s how he was able to be ejected from the car.”

Goulet said Moore was not wearing a seat belt. 

Investigators don’t suspect alcohol or drug impairment. 

“I didn’t smell anything or see any evidence of that,” Goulet said. “The medical examiner will do a full report.”
