Alex Hart had his best outing of the summer while the Wilson Tobs scored all their runs via home runs for the second game in a row to defeat the Wilmington Sharks 3-2 in a Coastal Plain League game Tuesday evening at Fleming Stadium.
Hart, a Barton College product, worked six innings, striking out a season-high 10, to get the win — his second without a loss. Mason Sykes hammered a solo home run to start the Tobs in the bottom of the first inning while Sammy Sass delivered a two-run bomb in the third that proved to be the winning margin.
The victory, their third straight, left the Tobs 13-6 and a half-game ahead of the Morehead City Marlins (12-6) atop the CPL’s East Division. The Sharks, sitting in sixth place in the seven-team East, dipped to 7-13.
Wilson, coming off a 7-3 win Monday at Holly Springs, totaled seven hits and didn’t make an error. Jacob McCaskey, who scored on Sass’ homer, led the Tobs with a 2-for-4 showing. It was the fourth homer in 10 games for Sykes, who trails only first baseman Matt Schark on the Tobs, and the second in five games for Sass.
Hart was brilliant in his fourth start of the season, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk. Hart plunked lead-off batter Pat Monteith with a pitch in the top of the fifth and the next hitter, David Milam, slammed a two-run shot to narrow the lead to one. But Hart struck out the next three batters to escape further damage. The only other hit he allowed was a first-inning single to A.J. Mendolia.
Tom Reisinger and Jake Curry each tossed a scoreless inning before Brent Francisco came on in the ninth. He walked one and struck out two in picking up his third save.
In Monday’s 7-3 win over the Holly Springs Salamanders, Wilson ripped three homers, including blasts by Scharks and center fielder Scott Mackiewicz as part of a four-run eruption in the top of the sixth at Ting Stadium.
Sykes pounded a three-run shot in the top of the third to put Wilson ahead 3-1. Schark and Mackiewicz each had two of Wilson’s seven hits.
Trent Harris picked up the win on the mound while N.C. State rising sophomore and Wilson product Jacob Dienes struck out five in his two scoreless innings of work to end the game.
The Tobs will travel to Asheboro on Wednesday to take on the West Division ZooKeepers at McCrary Park before returning to Fleming for a “Thirsty Thursday” game against the Tri-City Chili Peppers.
