SubscribeThe events in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday were reprehensible and uncalled for. They overshadowed the tens of thousands of protesters who acted properly. Just like the truly peaceful protesters in major cities over the last six to eight months. The bad takes away from those who are good.
After watching the news and reading social media posts and e-mails, it’s apparent there is wide range of emotion. Some blame the president and his advisers’ rhetoric, some blame Antifa infiltrators, some blame anyone who has supported the president, some blame conspiracy.
Do we blame those who voices seemed to incite the action? Those who heard the words had a choice to make. Choices have consequences, just like elections. The reality is we are all responsible for our behavior and anyone who entered the Capitol should feel the full force of law for their destructive behavior. That said, facing consequences includes those who spoke to the crowd — they failed us.
Trying to make sense of the situation requires careful thought and patience. Too many times there is a rush to judgement, and as I learned in my 41-plus years in the Navy, the first report is always wrong. People trying to get the story out first often miss important details. It also requires a questioning attitude that asks the hard questions and waits for the right answers. We continue to miss that important step.
Finally, how did we get here? Over the last four years, there has been constant negative reporting about the president. Almost never was credit given for things that made positive impacts on the lives of the American people. And even then, it was “well, it could have been better” or “it was the result of previous administration work.” Also, anyone or any group that supported the president was demonized.
The setup was there and fault rests with everyone, not just one person or group. The events on Jan. 6 may have been averted had there been more balance in reporting and discussion of the administration and achievements. We will never know, and rushing to lay blame only highlights the negative reporting.
