Police have arrested three Wilson men on attempted murder charges in a month-old car chase and shooting.

The pursuit happened at 8:15 p.m. on Dec. 17, Wilson Police Department spokesman Sgt. Eric Kearney said.

“Officers were in the area of the 1800 block of Bishop L.N. Forbes Street (Southeast) when an officer witnessed one vehicle chasing another vehicle when he heard shots being fired,” Kearney said in a news release issued in response to a Wilson Times inquiry. “The vehicle being chased, a 1998 Nissan Maxima, was located unoccupied and wrecked into a fence.”

Kearney said the car pursuing the Nissan sedan, an Infiniti G35,  fled the area but “collided with an uninvolved vehicle” in the 700 block of Lane Street.

No one was inside the Infiniti when officers arrived. Police didn’t receive reports of any injuries.

“Detectives were able to follow up and identify suspects,” Kearney said. 

Police obtained arrest warrants charging 21-year-old Jaris Alton Artis of Wilson with one count each of felony attempted first-degree murder, felony discharging a firearm from an enclosure and felony discharging a weapon into an occupied property or motor vehicle. 

Eric Gerald McCray Jr., 29, of Wilson, faces the same three charges along with a count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. 

Police identified the third suspect as 23-year-old Tyrick Williams of Wilson. He’s charged with the same offenses: attempted first-degree murder, discharging a firearm from an enclosure and discharging a weapon into an occupied property or motor vehicle.

McCray was arrested on Dec. 28 and booked into the Wilson County Detention Center under a $1 million secured bond.

Williams’ arrest warrants were served Jan. 4. A magistrate set his bond at $100,000.

Officers arrested Artis on Monday. He was jailed under a $250,000 bond.

Artis faces pending charges of misdemeanor carrying a concealed gun and speeding in Wilson County, according to online court calendars.

McCray has pending Wilson County charges of possession of a firearm by a felon, felony attempted breaking or entering a building, felony attempted common-law robbery, felony probation violation, misdemeanor assault on a female and misdemeanor communicating threats.

The N.C. Department of Public Safety website indicates none of the three suspects has a record of criminal convictions resulting in prison time or probation in North Carolina.
