Hunt girls lacrosse players, front, pose with D.H. Conley after the Lady Warriors played their first game in program history March 5, 2020 in Greenville. Hunt was the only Wilson County school to play in 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic began, leaving Fike and Beddingfield left to play its inaugural games.

The second first act for girls lacrosse — at least for two schools in Wilson County — is just about here.

Beddingfield’s Raekwon Batts (23) drives to the basket as Hunt’s C.J. Joyner defends during a Jan. 13 game against Hunt at Beddingfield. It was the last game played for both the Warriors and Bruins, as a positive COVID-19 test from a Beddingfield player the next day quarantined all three Wilson County public school boys teams through Jan. 23. Fike played the Bruins on Jan. 12.

Hunt players celebrate after winning a point against Greenville Rose during an NCHSAA 3-A second-round playoff match Jan. 14 at Hunt. While the Lady Warriors didn’t win this match, they were part of a postseason that had the feel of ones of old, writes Jimmy Lewis, in part because the COVID-19 pandemic shortened the playoffs by a round and created matchups truly deserving of the postseason for the first time in a long time.
