Free coffee for veterans offered
The Daughters of the American Revolution’s Thomas Hadley Chapter will hold its monthly veterans’ coffee hour from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Friday, April 9, at Something Different Cafe and Catering, 3342 Airport Blvd. NW.
Drive-in financial aid clinic planned
Barton College will host an in-person help session for high school students, college students and family members on completing the Free Applications for Federal Student Aid from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 10.
The Drive-In To Your Future event will allow students to fill out their forms in the parking lot with help from financial aid experts. Sessions will be held on the Barton College campus at 400 Atlantic Christian College Drive. Families are asked to use the main entrance and park in the parking lot next to the bell tower.
Sessions are also planned at the same times on Saturday, April 17, and Saturday, April 24.
Meal giveaway scheduled Sunday
Waymakers of North Carolina will give away free meals from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, April 11, at Angel Way Missionary Worship Center, 325 Nash St. NE.
The nonprofit is made up of individuals, businesses and churches working together to provide a hot meal every month. Meal giveaways are usually held on the first Sunday of each month, but April’s meal was postponed due to Easter. Visit https://waymakersofnc.org/ to learn more or donate.
Landscape plant, bulb presentation slated
The N.C. Cooperative Extension in Wilson County will hold a virtual Garden Talks presentation, “Selecting Landscape Plants and Bulbs,” at 3 p.m. Monday, April 19.
Leslie Rose, a Cooperative Extension horticulture agent in Forsyth County and Tanglewood Park arboretum and gardens director, will provide information on assessing growing conditions in residential yards and matching plants to those conditions.

Scholarship application deadline approaching
Completed applications for the Charles H. Darden Alumni Scholarship are due on Tuesday, April 20.
Applications have been distributed to Fike, Hunt and Beddingfield high schools and the Wilson Early College Academy. Students who wish to apply can also pick up an application at the Darden Alumni Center, 1600 Lipscomb Road.

Cemetery raising money for upkeep
ELM CITY — The town’s Black cemetery, recently renamed Heritage Cemetery, is holding a spring fundraiser throughout the month of April. A $20 donation will pay for the cemetery’s lawn care, repair the driveway, designate parking and install military flags for veterans’ graves.
Checks or money orders can be mailed to Heritage Cemetery, P.O. Box 21, Elm City NC 27822. Donors can contribute through Cash App by using the cashtag $HeritageCemetery or donate through PayPal at www.paypal.com/biz/fund?id=7BN3FBF7R9GP2.
