American Legion baseball and softball tryouts for Wilson Post 13 teams will be held Saturday, May 14, at Barton College Sports Complex, starting at 10 a.m.

The baseball workout will take place on the practice diamond adjacent to Nixon Field while softball players should report to Jeffries Field. Baseball players cannot turn 19 before Jan. 1, 2023.

Softball is in its second season at Post 13 with Presley Bissett back as coach. The Wilson Christian graduate played collegiately at Presbyterian. Bissett worked as an assistant coach at Barton College this spring. She will be assisted by former Beddingfield High and Tusculum University standout Allison Pate.

Post 13 will play its games again this summer at Onnie R. Cockrell Athletic Complex in Rock Ridge.

Matt Ballance is back for his third season and second officially as Post 13 head coach. Ballance headed Team Elite, a team formed in 2020 when American Legion Baseball had officially shut down for summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Ballance, now head coach at Beddingfield High, will be assisted by Lloyd Davis again this summer.

The Post 13 season will look a little different this summer, Ballance said, with Wilson being moved to the Area I West Division for the first time. Ballance said it was because Plymouth will have a team this summer. So Post 13 will be facing the likes of Fuquay-Varina, Durham, Louisburg and Wake Forest as well as its traditional East Division rivals Pitt County, Ahoskie, Kinston and Wayne County.

Post 13 will open its season Thursday, May 26, against Post 187 North Wake Fungo at Heritage High in Wake Forest. The first home game is the following night, Friday, May 27, against Plymouth at Fleming Stadium.
