CHARLOTTE — Josh Hood, Devonte Brown and Payton Green each homered in a five-run seventh inning and 10th-seeded North Carolina State beat No. 6 seed Wake Forest 11-8 on Tuesday in the ACC Tournament.
N.C. State (34-20) plays No. 3 seed Miami on Wednesday, and Wake Forest (39-17-1) faces the Hurricanes on Friday.
N.C. State took the lead for good during a six-run fifth inning. Hood, Jacob Cozart and LuJames Groover III each had an RBI double in the inning as the Wolfpack took a 6-4 lead. Hood's 14th homer of the season made it 11-5.
Hood had a team-high three RBIs, and Green and Cozart each added two.
Canaan Silver (7-1) allowed one earned run in 1 1/3 innings of relief for N.C. State. Chris Villaman picked up his 10th save after three innings of work.
Brock Wilken led Wake Forest with three hits and three RBIs. Wilken hit a leadoff triple in the sixth and scored on Jake Reinisch's single to get Wake Forest within 6-5. Wilken added a two-run homer, his 20th of the season, in the seventh.
Wake Forest was without head coach Tom Walter due to an illness.
PITT 12, GEORGIA TECH 6
CHARLOTTE — Ron Washington Jr. homered and drove in four runs, Jeffrey Wehler added three RBIs and No. 11 seed Pittsburgh used an eight-run sixth inning to rally past seventh-seeded Georgia Tech 12-6 on Tuesday in the opening game of the ACC Tournament.
Pittsburgh (28-26) faces No. 2 seed Louisville on Wednesday and Georgia Tech (33-22) plays the Cardinals on Thursday.
Washington and Bryce Hulett hit back-to-back homers to begin the sixth, and Wehler added a two-run single to give Pitt an 8-6 lead. Washington’s 14th home run of the season was the first of his two hits in the inning.
Georgia Tech walked four batters in the ninth inning, and Wehler capitalized with his third straight single to extend Pitt’s lead to 11-6.
Matt Gilbertson (9-3) allowed four earned runs and nine hits in five innings for Pitt. Jonathan Bautista pitched four scoreless innings to earn his first career save.
Kevin Parada, who set a Georgia Tech single-season record with 26 homers, was 0 for 3 with a run scored. Sam Crawford (0-1) took the loss, allowing three earned runs without recording an out in the sixth inning.
Pitt lost three straight games at home to Georgia Tech last week by a combined score of 40-17.
UNC 9, CLEMSON 2
CHARLOTTE — Leadoff batter Angel Zarate reached base five times, scoring four runs, to spark No. 8 seed North Carolina to a 9-2 victory over No. 12 seed Clemson in first-round pool play at the ACC Tournament on Tuesday.
Clemson (35-22) will play No. 1 seed Virginia Tech (40-11) on Thursday. North Carolina (35-19) will play Virginia Tech on Friday to conclude pool play.
Zarate had a double, three singles and drew a walk for the Tar Heels. He singled home a run in the fifth inning to give the Tar Heels an 8-1 lead. Danny Serretti and Vance Honeycutt both drove in two runs.
Max Carlson (2-2) allowed one run on six hits in six innings, striking out four to get the win.
Mack Anglin (6-6) took the loss for the Tigers. He surrendered seven runs — five earned — on seven hits and four walks in four innings. Will Taylor had two hits and an RBI.
