Paintings by David Davenport, including "Afternoon Reflection," are featured in “Down East Light” at The Edge Gallery at 127 Barnes St. The show continues through June 25.

The Edge is featuring David Davenport’s eastern North Carolina oil paintings in “Down East Light.”

“The Edge is very excited to have David Davenport’s new collection of paintings coming to our wall because not only are his paintings beautiful, but they represent the eastern North Carolina rural landscape and especially the reflections of incredible effects of the area’s special light and also because of David’s deep ties to the area,” said Barb White, owner and curator of The Gallery at the Edge.

The exhibit is open through June 25.

Davenport grew up in Williamston and enjoyed visiting his grandparents’ farm in nearby Bear Grass. He received a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from East Carolina University and started his professional career as an art director in advertising, eventually making his way to work in New York City.

During this time, he attended the Art Student League and the Studio School of New York and rekindled his desire for painting. Davenport received a teaching fellowship from the department of fine arts at the University of Maryland and graduated with an master’s in fine arts in painting.

Davenport is inspired by the landscape he remembers from his youth and that he still explores when visiting his family’s homeplace in Bear Grass. The paintings that will be on exhibit at The Edge focus on the atmospheric beauty of the landscape’s barns, fields and abandoned buildings and emphasize the effects of light on these subjects. Some of the works are imagined and others are loose interpretations of the actual place, enhanced by his memory and imagination.

Davenport maintains a studio in Durham, and his work is in corporate and private collections throughout the state.

White has focused on representing different genres of art and creative styles and has attracted a variety of accomplished artists, both local (Wilson based) as well as talent from Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill and Hillsborough. The goal is to bring interesting and meaningful art to Wilson for all to enjoy.

“I believe that art should be more accessible to rural communities and realize that not everyone is able to visit the art galleries and museums located in the larger urban centers. While all the art is for sale, it will remain on exhibit for the duration of the show, for all to see.

“After only being able to open to the public in April 2021 due to COVID-19, we are delighted to have attracted this caliber of artists, such as David Davenport, as well as past exhibiting artists, Annie Nashold, Sebastian Correa and Lori Leachman. It is an honor and privilege to have created this opportunity to bring these first class art shows to our new gallery,” White said.

The Gallery at The Edge Wilson is located in a recently renovated 100-year-old building at the edge of historic downtown Wilson at the corner of Pine and Barnes streets. Gallery hours are noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday to Friday, noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday.
