Darden Alumni celebrates 50 years
Posted on May 6, 2021
The Charles H. Darden High School Alumni Association, Inc. will celebrate its golden anniversary during the Memorial Day weekend, May 28-30.
Two years ago planning started for a huge gala celebration, then the coronavirus pandemic happened and all plans were put on hold. However, amid the pandemic, mask wearing, hand-washing and COVID-19 vaccinations, the executive committee decided to proceed with a much smaller celebration and follow federal and state regulations as allowed by the CDC safety guidelines.
The theme for this year is “A Legacy of 50 Years … The Past, The Present, The Future.” The Friday night program will honor seven Darden Alumni Association Hall of Fame nominees for their outstanding contributions to Darden Alumni and their respective communities.
This year’s nominees are James Forbes for leadership, Joan Jackson-Barnes for education and leadership, James Lewis for athletics and leadership, Renee Oates for leadership, Clifton Williams Sr. for leadership, Trevynne Williams for philanthropy and leadership and Andre Winstead for business and leadership. Joan Jackson-Barnes and Clifton Williams Sr. will be honored posthumously.
Andre Winstead will be speaker.
The Charles H. Darden High School Alumni Association, Inc. was formed in 1971 by a group of Trojans who wanted the legacy of the old Darden High School to be remembered after it was closed at the end of the academic year in 1970 due to changes from integration of the public schools.
The group’s primary goal is to provide scholarship opportunities for Wilson County public high school students graduating from Beddingfield, Fike, Hunt and the Wilson Early College Academy. More than a half million dollars has been awarded to many deserving students through 2020.
Tickets for the May 28 50th anniversary and seventh hall of fame banquet are $40 per person.
