RALEIGH — Tuesday night found most incumbents in north and eastern Wake County winning their seats — with three exceptions.
In Wake Forest, longtime Mayor Vivian Jones won reelection with 3,354 votes or roughly 54% of the vote to Commissioner Bridget Wall-Lennon’s 2,775 or roughly 45%. Jones has been mayor since December 2001.
Results are unofficial until after every county counts every eligible ballot and the state Board of Elections completes its random post-election audits, according to Karen Brinson Bell, executive director of the state board.
Five people ran for two Wake Forest commissioner seats. Keith Shackleford received the most votes at 2,928 followed by Nick Sliwinski with 2,850. Incumbent Liz Simpers came in fourth with 2,237 votes.
Simpers and Wall-Lennon will serve until the new board is sworn in at the December meeting. Afterward, Jones will be the only woman representing the town, while Shackleford will be the only person of color.
Knightdale Mayor Jessica Day will finish up an unexpired term. She was appointed earlier this year when James Roberson became the representative of District 39 in the N.C. House. Day will serve until the November 2023 elections. Day received 1,234 votes or 73% to Charles Bullock Sr.’s 440 or 26%.
Four people also ran for three seats on the Knightdale Council. Planning Board Member Steve Evans received 1,097 votes or 27%. Councilor Latatious Morris received 1,051 votes. She was appointed to the council to fill Day’s spot when she was appointed mayor. Mark Swan rounds out the top three with 963 votes.
Both of Wendell’s incumbents will be returning to the governing board. Jon Lutz was the No. 1 vote-getter with 680 or 20% of the vote. Deans Eatman, who serves on the planning board, received 656 votes, and Jason Joyner got 646 votes. Mayor Pro-Tem John Boyette didn’t run for re-election.
In Rolesville, four people ran for three spots on the board of commissioners. Incumbents April Sneed and Paul Vilga were victorious, along with newcomer Dan Tyrone Alston. Sneed received 648 votes, Alston 562 and Vilga got 468. Jacky Wilson came in fourth with 455. His term will end in December.
In Zebulon, longtime mayor Bob Matheny decided to not run for reelection after more than 40 years in politics. His successor will be Glenn York, who received 460 votes or 83%. Patrick Bolger received 82 votes or 15%.
Four people also ran for two seats on the board. Quentin Miles will be a new face with 401 votes or 42% of the vote. Incumbent Beverly Wall Clark received 203 votes or 21%. Annie Jean Moore received only 181 votes, so she won’t be returning to the board.
