<p>WAKE FOREST &mdash; A Wake Forest charter school has an outbreak of COVID-19, authorities said.</p>
<p>Envision Science Academy, 590 Traditions Grande Blvd., had one student and four staff members test positive for COVID-19, according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services.</p>
<p>It joins nine other K-12 schools in Wake County that have active clusters. That means at least five people tested positive for the virus within 14 days with plausible links between the cases.</p>
<p>Two clusters at North Raleigh Christian Academy are over, which means it's been 28 days since someone tested positive in those groups. A third cluster at the school is still ongoing, though no new positive tests were reported.</p>
<p>No new cases have been reported in clusters at Cary High School, Our Lady of Lourdes School, Cardinal Gibbons High School, Neuse Christian Academy, The Franciscan School, The Cathedral School, Wake Christian Academy and Cary Christian School.</p>
<p>Three new clusters have been reported in Wake childcare facilities.</p>
<p>Millbrook Kindercare in Raleigh had five students test positive for COVID-19, according to N.C. DHHS. Little Learners&rsquo; Magic Moments Preschool in Raleigh has five positive students and one positive employee. Oak Village Academy in Cary had two students and three staff members test positive.</p>
<p>No new cases have been reported in clusters at Wakefield Creative School, Kids R Kids of Wake Forest, ABC Land in Wendell, Lightbridge Academy in Holly Springs, Bright Horizons Children&rsquo;s Center Cary, La Petite Academy, the Goddard School of Raleigh (North), The Goddard School of Brier Creek, Infant-Toddler Center of First Baptist Church or Foundations Academy.</p>
<p>No clusters have been reported in any Franklin County schools or childcare facilities.&nbsp;</p>
<h5><strong>WCPSS</strong></h5>
<p>Fourteen students and four employees tested for COVID-19, according to the Wake County Public School System&rsquo;s COVID-19 dashboard. An additional 16 students and 11 staff members are waiting on test results.</p>
<p>Heritage High and Wake Forest Elementary each had one student test positive.</p>
<p>Test results are pending for one student at Wendell Elementary and one at Brassfield Elementary. One employee is waiting for test results at each East Millbrook Middle, Lake Myra Elementary and Rolesville High schools.&nbsp;</p>

<p>RALEIGH &mdash; More than 4,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses were transferred to 29 different vaccine providers at the Wake County Public Health Center on Friday.</p>
<p>The vaccines included the first doses of the Johnson &amp; Johnson's vaccine, according to the Wake County Public Health Team. The team reached out to more than 150 state-approved COVID-19 vaccine providers in the county, most of whom haven&rsquo;t received direct vaccine shipments, it said in a press release.</p>
<p>&ldquo;J&amp;J&rsquo;s easier single dosing, storage and handling are especially appealing for reaching challenging locations, such as mobile clinics and community health providers,&rdquo; tweeted Matt Calabria, chairman of the county commissioners. &ldquo;Its one-shot doses don&rsquo;t require ultra-cold freezers and provided the ideal opportunity for Wake Public Health to kick-start a community vaccination program. These smaller vaccine providers can help increase our capacity and get more doses in arms to protect more people.&rdquo;</p>
<p>The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines require two shots around three weeks apart and have to be stored at very cold temperatures that most health departments and pharmacies don&rsquo;t have access to. The Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccine is a single-dose shot and can be stored in a regular refrigerator for about three months.</p>
<p>Friday&rsquo;s distribution comes just days after the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services changed when people in Group 3 and 4 could receive their vaccinations.</p>
<p>Group 3 is frontline essential workers, including college and university employees, grocery store workers and farmworkers. They could start receiving their shots Wednesday.</p>
<p>People in Group 4 can start being vaccinated March 24. That group is adults at high risk for exposure, and includes essential workers not yet vaccinated, such as hotel workers and plumbers; those with chronic illnesses, such as people with asthma or diabetes; and people who live in close group settings, such as the homeless and incarcerated people.</p>
<p>People in the previous groups are still eligible to receive their vaccination and will be prioritized, N.C. DHHS said.</p>

<p>As of Friday, the state had administered around 89% of the total vaccines it had received, according to the N.C. DHHS dashboard. That&rsquo;s more than 2.5 million doses statewide.</p>
<p>Statewide, most people who have received their vaccine have been white, around 77%; and non-Hispanic, around 96%. Around 60% are female.</p>
<p>Most people receiving their first dose of the vaccine this week are 65 and older, around 64%.</p>
<p>More than 263,000 vaccines have been administered in Wake County. More than 94,600 people have taken both doses.</p>
<p>In Franklin County, more than 14,000 doses have been administered. Around 5,600 people have taken both shots.</p>
<p>CVS and Walgreens have given more than 213,000 vaccines to residents and employees in long-term care facilities.&nbsp;</p>

Johnson & Johnson vaccine arrives in Wake County

<p>RALEIGH &mdash; North Carolina&rsquo;s key metrics are decreasing, even though they remain high, the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services said.</p>
<p>There are only six counties considered to have critical community spread on County Alert Map as of Thursday. N.C. DHHS also calls these red counties. Thirty-four counties are considered to have substantial community spread, also called orange. Wake and Franklin counties are both in this category. Sixty counties have significant community spread, also called yellow.</p>
<p>In comparison, the Feb. 22 map showed 27 red counties, 40 orange counties and 33 yellow counties.</p>
<p>Thursday&rsquo;s map shows the fewest red counties since the start of the County Alert Map, N.C. DHHS said.</p>
<p>&ldquo;This is encouraging, but progress can be fragile,&rdquo; tweeted Gov. Roy Cooper about the new map. &ldquo;Let&rsquo;s continue wearing our masks and following safety protocols as we get closer to beating this virus.&rdquo;</p>
<p>A county is considered red if it has more than 200 new cases per 100,000 residents over 14 days and has a positive test rate of 10.1% or higher or COVID-19 has a high impact on the county&rsquo;s hospitals.</p>
<p>Orange counties have between 101-200 new cases per 100,000 residents over 14 days and has a positive test rate of 8-10% or COVID-19 has a moderate impact on the county&rsquo;s hospitals.</p>
<p>Any county with numbers below the orange metric is considered yellow.</p>
<h5><strong>Wake County by the numbers</strong></h5>
<p>Wake County reported 892 new cases of COVID-19 since Feb. 26, according to the N.C. DHHS. Cases within the last week may not have been reported yet.</p>
<p>More than 74,000 people in Wake County have tested positive, according to N.C. DHHS. That number includes people who have recovered.</p>
<p>Wake Forest saw 101 new cases since Feb. 26, according to the Wake County Public Health Team. It has seen 5,376 cases since the beginning of the pandemic.</p>
<p>Knightdale had 40 new cases for 2,724 total while Wendell had 28 for a total of 1,792. Zebulon had 36 new cases for a total of 1,602, and Rolesville had 12 for a total of 599.</p>
<p>Countywide, about 4.9% of people tested were positive for COVID-19, according to N.C. DHHS. The department wants to see less than 5%.</p>
<p>Most people who test positive are under the age of 50, around 72%. School aged kids account for around 11%. More than half are female, 52%, and 23% are ethnically Hispanic. Around 52% are white while 21% are Black.</p>
<p>Around 51% of Wake County is female while around 21% are Black and around 10% are ethnically Hispanic.</p>
<p>At least one death have been reported in Wake County since Feb. 26, according to N.C. DHHS. At least 540 people have died since the pandemic began. Deaths occurring within the last week may not have been reported, according to N.C. DHHS.</p>
<p>Around 68% were 75 or older and about 50% were female. Around 3% didn&rsquo;t report their gender or age.</p>
<p>Around 53% were white and 31% were Black. About 8% identified as Hispanic. Around 3% didn&rsquo;t report their race or ethnicity.</p>
<h5><strong>Franklin County by the numbers</strong></h5>
<p>Franklin County reported at least 71 new COVID-19 cases since Feb. 26, according to the N.C. DHHS. &nbsp;Cases within the last week may not have been reported yet. At least 5,400 people have tested positive since the beginning of the pandemic, including those who have recovered.</p>
<p>About 9.1% of people tested were positive. N.C. DHHS wants less than 5%.</p>
<p>Most people who test positive are under the age of 50, around 68%. School aged kids account for around 11%. More than half are female, 52%, and 18% are ethnically Hispanic. Around 61% are white while 23% are Black.</p>
<p>Around 51% of Franklin County is female while around 26% are Black and around 9% are ethnically Hispanic.</p>
<p>No new deaths have been reported since Feb. 17, according to N.C. DHHS. Franklin County has seen 45 deaths in total, according to N.C. DHHS.</p>
<p>Around 35% were 75 or older and about 43% were male. Around 35% didn&rsquo;t report their age or gender.</p>
<p>Around 32% were white and 32% were Black. About 2% identified as Hispanic. Around 37% didn&rsquo;t report their race or ethnicity.</p>
<h5><strong>North Carolina by the numbers</strong></h5>
<p>Across the state, 2,093 new COVID-19 cases were reported Friday. Cases within the last week may not have been reported yet. At least 870,149 people have tested positive since March 2020, including those who have recovered.</p>
<p>About 4.3% of people tested were positive. At least 10.4 million tests have been taken.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Most people who test positive are under the age of 50, around 65%. School aged kids account for around 10%. More than half are female, 53%, and 21% are ethnically Hispanic. Around 62% are white while 21% are Black.</p>
<p>Statewide, around 51% of people are female and around 10% are Hispanic. Roughly 22% are Black.</p>
<p>At least 62 deaths have been reported since Feb. 26, according to N.C. DHHS. More than 11,000 North Carolinians have died since the beginning of a pandemic, according to N.C. DHHS.</p>
<p>Around 60% were 75 or older and about 52% were male.</p>
<p>Around 66% were white and 25% were Black. About 8% identified as Hispanic.</p>
<h5><strong>Hospitalizations</strong></h5>
<p>Around 1,226 people were hospitalized across the state as of Friday, according to N.C. DHHS. Around 100 of them are in the Capital Region Healthcare Preparedness Coalition, which includes both Wake and Franklin Counties.</p>
<p>Around 84% of available beds are filled. An additional 246 aren&rsquo;t staffed. Around 88% of available ICU beds are in use; a further 26 aren&rsquo;t staffed. About 30% of ventilators are in use.&nbsp;</p>
