ROLESVILLE — The Rolesville Board of Commissioners hope to finalize the town budget by June 7.
The board discussed the budget during the May 3 meeting, and will hold a hearing before approving plans for the 2022-23 fiscal year, which begins July 1.
The proposed budget is $22,590,300, just short of the $23,472,780 approved for the 2021-22 fiscal year.
“Last year, we budgeted for the Main Street Corridor project, which brought about the difference,” said Amy Stevens, Rolesville financial officer.
The highlights of the budget include keeping property tax at .46 for the third consecutive year and making no change to the solid waste fee of $22 per month. The budget also specifies intentions to add a part-time communications specialist, pay increases for town staff members, investments in new software and funding for several capital projects. Among them are the Community Center at Cobblestone, construction of a public works facility and site development for the future municipal complex.
“Overall, I think this is a good budget,” said Rolesville Mayor Ronnie Currin. “We talked about increases for staff to make sure they’re retained. We’re at 100 percent or close to it in each department and we want to make sure our employees are taken care of. It’s a strong capital budget and fortunately there are no increases to the residents.”
The board wants to incorporate funds for a park in Rolesville as well, one of the main reasons for the voting delay.
“We bought a piece of property by the 401 bypass several years ago and wanted to get funding together for an entrance and exit to activate the park,” Mayor Pro Team Paul Vilga said. “We wanted to make sure we had money in the budget for it.”
The initial estimates for the park are between $600,000 to $800,000, which would include signage, an entrance and exit, gravel parking lot, ball fields and a possible ampitheater. The funding for the park would come from park impact fees.
A public hearing on the budget will be held at the next Rolesville board meeting on Tuesday, May 17, at 7 p.m.
