ERWIN — The 12U North Wake Grays from Wake Forest won the championship game at the BODYARMOR State Games Summer Zone Qualifier June 12 at the Erwin Municipal Park.

The Grays qualified for the Gold Bracket after going 2-0 in pool play, beating the NC Freedom Fighters 12-2 Saturday June 11 at 10:30 a.m. and then beat the TPA Nationals Black team 6-5 in the 12:30 p.m. game.

Starting at 10:45 a.m. the following Sunday, the Grays defeated Carolina 35’s Fuquay-Varina Blue 6-5 to advance to the championship match. In the Gold Bracket finals, North Wake took down MVP Athletics 5-3.

North Wake finished the Summer Zone Qualifier with 29 runs scored and 15 allowed, which is their best defensive performance in a tournament so far this season.

This is the third baseball tournament championship this year for North Wake and the second in a row after winning the Summer Zone Qualifier the week before. The team is led by head coach Chris Davidson and assistant coach Justin Hime.

North Wake will compete in the Summer World Series at Rocky Mount this upcoming weekend starting Friday, June 24. If they win their game Friday, they will play in the Southern Summer World Series in Georgia Saturday, June 25.
