Donnie Hight, left, is congratulated for his service by Mark Dwyer, the commander of the Walter E. Cole Post 187 American Legion. Hight, a lifetime resident of Wake Forest, received his 60-year American Legion service award at Post 187’s regular meeting in March. Hight enrolled in the Wake Forest American Legion following his release from active service in the U.S. Navy after World War II and has continued ever since. The group said Hight has contributed to the advancement of the Legion Post and the community of Wake Forest. Hight has participated in the enhancements to the Wake Forest Veterans Memorial while serving as chairman of the committee dedicated to the preservation of an important veteran monument devoted to the citizens of Wake Forest who perished while defending the nation in all conflicts since the Revolutionary War. The monument serves as an important location for community service honoring Wake Forest veterans.
