From staff reportsSPARTANBURG, S.C. — Barton College extended its reign over NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas men’s golf for a third year as the Bulldogs captured the 54-hole conference championship Tuesday at The Carolina Country Club. Led by junior Ryan Jahr, whose 2-under-par 214 final score tied him for second place individually, the Bulldogs finished nine strokes ahead of runner-up Mount Olive with an 11-over 875 on the par-72, 6,929-yard layout. Also earning all-tournament acclaim for Barton was sophomore Giovanni Bruno, who tied for seventh overal with a 5-over 221. Mount Olive’s Oscar Lonnqvist won the conference championship by a stroke over Jahr and King’s Aasmund Norum. Barton moves to the Div. II South/Southeast Regional at Mission Inn Golf and Resort at Howie-in-the-Hills, Florida, from May 8-10. MEN’S VOLLEYBALL Bulldogs reach CC semis Barton swept King University for a third time this season, this time in the quarterfinals of the Conference Carolinas tournament at Wilson Gymnasium on Wednesday evening. Now the No. 3-seeded Bulldogs (16-12) hope history won’t repeat itself as they head to the semifinals against No. 2 Belmont Abbey, which beat Barton in both regular-season matches. The Bulldogs’ 25-15, 25-13, 25-19 win against the No. 6 Tornado (4-23) was led by senior outside hitter Jack Sandahl with 12 kills and Lawson Hink with 10. Seth Deppe delivered 33 assists and seven digs. Barton, which hit at a .345 clip in the match, will take on Abbey, which had a first-round bye, in the semifinals April 25 at the Student Center Complex at King in Bristol, Tennessee. SOFTBALL BC sweeps Chowan to end regular season Barton finished the regular season with a four-game winning streak after sweeping a doubleheader from Conference Carolinas visitor Chowan on Wednesday afternoon at Jeffries Field. The Bulldogs stopped the Hawks 8-7 in the first game and 7-4 in the finale to take a 25-21 overall mark and 11-13 league record into the Conference Carolinas tournament, which starts Thursday, April 24, Tyger River Park in Duncan, South Carolina. Barton trailed 7-1 heading into the bottom of the second inning of game 1 Wednesday but rallied with five runs in its second turn at-bat. The Bulldogs then scored a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings, the latter coming on a double by Grayson Massey for the winning run. Kierstin Cooper got the pitching win in relief after giving up just two unearned runs in 5 2/3 innings. Ronnetta Gurley and Massey each drove in two runs while Madison Mercer went 2 for 4. In game 2, Barton scored the go-ahead run on a bases-loaded walk to Makenzie Burroughs in the bottom of the fifth. Game 1 starter Emily Bobo (6-4) earned the win in relief of Ali Bunch in the circle. Shortstop MacKenzie Taylor went 2 for 3 with a triple and three RBIs while Massey doubled in a run. | April 17, 2025
