KENLY — Freshman guard Marcel Freeman dropped in 23 points to spark his North Johnston High varsity boys basketball team to a 66-47 defeat of Raleigh Charter in the final game of the Johnstonian News Holiday Invitational’s first day on Tuesday.

The 2-A Neuse 6 Conference Panthers evened their record at 5-5 as they moved into Wednesday night’s championship game against Neuse Charter, which downed Spring Creek in the first semifinal. North Johnston held Raleigh Charter (0-4) to just two points in the first quarter and led 36-12 at the half.

Freeman was complemented by sophomore Ahmir Bryant and junior Jaylen Summler with 11 points each. Senior Colin Smith’s 16 points sparked the 2-A Phoenix of the 1-A/2-A Super Six Conference.

Cougars ride big 4th quarter past Gators

KENLY — Neuse Charter broke open what had been a close game by outscoring Spring Creek 20-5 in the fourth quarter of a 52-27 victory in the first boys semifinal Tuesday at North Johnston High.

The 1-A Carolina Conference Cougars, now 10-4, got six points from senior Tommy Noles and five from Sire Holmes in the fourth quarter in pulling away for the win. Senior Eli Ayres led Neuse Charter with 11 points while Noles finished with 10.

Spring Creek (5-4) of the 2-A Neuse 6 Conference was paced by junior Deyjhon Leonard with 13 points.

GIRLS

Panthers down Raleigh Charter 22-15

KENLY — In a game in which the host North Johnston girls didn’t manage a point in the second quarter, the Panthers still won handily over Raleigh Charter 22-15 in the second girls semifinal Tuesday.

North Johnston ran its record to 7-2 in moving to Wednesday’s championship game against fellow 2-A Neuse 6 Conference foe Spring Creek. The 2-A Phoenix of the 1-A/2-A Super Six Conference fell to 1-3.

Senior Nakiya Blue led the Panthers with six points while Emma Sheetz and Kenisha Barnes each scored five. Raleigh Charter, which will face Neuse Charter in the third-place game, got four points apiece from Meghan Healey and Sarah Clougherty.

Gators rally past Neuse Charter

KENLY — Neuse Charter held Spring Creek scoreless in the first quarter of the Johnstonian News Holiday Invitational’s opening game Tuesday, but that wasn’t enough to spark the Cougars to their first win.

The Gators outscored the Cougars 35-15 in the second half on the way to a 41-29 victory, catapulting Spring Creek into Wednesday’s championship game against host North Johnston.

Emily Williams scored 17 to lead Spring Creek (4-5) and Carmen Montoya added nine points while freshman Cayley Cochran netted 11 points for Neuse Charter (0-9), which was scheduled to face Raleigh Charter in Wednesday’s third-place game.
