KENLY — Two people are dead after a car speeding away from state troopers on U.S. 301 veered into oncoming traffic and caused a head-on crash with a pickup truck, the N.C. Highway Patrol said Monday.
The chase started in Wilson County when a trooper spotted a black Dodge Charger traveling 112 mph on U.S. 301 South near Oscar Loop Road outside Lucama at 8:35 a.m., 1st Sgt. Christopher D. Knox said in a news release. The posted speed limit on that stretch of the highway is 55 mph.
The Dodge sedan continued south, crossing into Johnston County. The driver didn’t stop for the trooper’s lights and siren, Knox said, and the Highway Patrol initiated a pursuit.
Moments later, Knox said the Charger crossed the center line on U.S. 301 and slammed into a white Ford pickup truck.
Troopers said two passengers in the truck were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names weren’t immediately available.
The Ford driver and the chase suspect sustained serious injuries and were taken to Wake Medical Center for treatment, Knox said in the release.
Troopers were still investigating the crash Monday afternoon. The drivers’ identities haven’t been disclosed.
