ZEBULON — A Zebulon man accused of killing his roommate called 911 to turn himself in, according to the Zebulon Police Department.

Around 10:15 p.m. Tuesday, first responders received a call about a shooting at 1303 Braemar Highlands Drive, police said. Officers found Chauncy Kassim Montague, 35, in the front yard, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Montague lived at the address.

Wake County EMS transported Montague to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said witnesses identified the other resident of the house as the shooter and said he left in a Dodge Charger. Zebulon Police notified other agencies to be on the look-out for him.

Travis Denawn Jordan, 32, called 911 as he drove away from Zebulon and told the dispatcher where he was going. Raleigh officers found him in the Dodge Charger on Ricker Road, Raleigh. They took him in without incident, police said.

Zebulon Police arrested him for murder. Investigators said the roommates had an argument that led to the shooting.

“This is a devastating night for the Montague family and our community,” said Chief Jacqui Boykin. “Our thoughts are with the family as they deal with this tragedy. Our staff is committed to finding justice for Montague’s loved ones.”

Boykin also thanked the Knightdale, Raleigh, Rolesville and Wendell police departments along with the Wake County Sheriff’s Office.

Jordan was placed in the Wake County Detention Center and received no bond.
