ROCKY MOUNT — A 9-year-old boy is recovering in the hospital after being shot in his home early Tuesday, according to authorities.

On May 10, 2022, at approximately 02:49 a.m., officers the Rocky Mount Police Department responded to reports of a shooting with injury in the 1000 block of Proctor St., said Kirk Brown, the city's director of communications, marketing and public relations.

"Once on the scene, officers found a 9-year-old male juvenile had sustained an injury from an apparent gunshot," Brown said. "The preliminary investigation shows an unknown subject fired shots into the residence and fled the scene."

The boy was transported to Vidant Hospital in Greenville where he is listed in stable condition.

The Rocky Mount criminal investigations division as well as the crime scene unit responded to the scene.

The investigation is on-going, Brown said.

Police scheduled a press conference for Tuesday afternoon to discuss the case and gun violence in the city.
