Sugar Run to support diabetes fight
Posted on March 26, 2019
For the second year, runners and walkers with join with the health care community of Nash and Edgecombe counties to raise awareness and money to fight the threat of diabetes.
The Twin County Sugar Run will be held Saturday, April 13, at Station Square in downtown Rocky Mount. A 5K run through downtown Rocky Mount and surrounding historic neighborhoods will start at 8 a.m., with a 1- mile fun run starting at 8:30 a.m. Participant packet pickup and on-site registration will start at 7 a.m. in the Station Square parking lot.
“Eastern North Carolina has a high prevalence of diabetes, with Nash and Edgecombe counties having double the death rate in 2017 than that of North Carolina,” said Amanda Bell, organizer of the Twin Counties Sugar Run. “Members of the Sugar Run Committee want to change this through prevention and education.”
In its 2018 inaugural year, the Twin Counties Sugar Run raised more than $7,000. All proceeds go toward the education, management and prevention of diabetes in Nash and Edgecombe counties.
“This disease too often gets overlooked, but the impact it has on the patients, the families, insurance rates, businesses and the community are overwhelming,” Bell said. “We were delighted to designate the 2018 funds to educational classes and look forward to making additional strides in our fight against diabetes in 2019.”
Vendors will be on hand for attendees from 8-10 a.m., where the first 200 visitors can enjoy breakfast and learn about the latest technology and research in the fight against diabetes.
The awards ceremony at 9 a.m. will feature a diabetic-friendly cooking demonstration by local chef Winde Jackson, owner of Winde Jackson Cakes & Catering.
This event is a community collaborative effort including the Nash County Health Department, Nash Health Care Foundation, Rocky Mount Family Medical Center, Boice-Willis Clinic, the Harrison Family YMCA, Novo Nordisk and the city of Rocky Mount.
Registration for the 5K is $25, which includes a T-shirt. Prizes will be awarded to men’s and women’s overall, as well as for under 14, 70 and over and 5-year age groups from 15 to 69.
