WAKE FOREST — Sheriff deputies say they have recovered the body of a man who drowned Saturday while at Falls Lake.

A press release named the victim as Kenneth Jerome Harris, 28, of Raleigh. The drowning was ruled an accident by the Wake County Sheriff’s Office.

Shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday, Wake County deputies responded to Falls Lake near Ghoston and New Light roads, a previous press release said. Once they arrived at the beach, deputies spoke to several witnesses who said their friend was in the water when he suddenly disappeared. They said the man couldn't swim.

The Wake County Sheriff's marine team was joined in the search by Franklin County's dive team and boats and divers from Lee, Durham and Wilson counties. Responders said they were hampered by low visibility and changing weather.

The body was located sometime before 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Three people have drowned at Falls Lake this year. A teen from Knightdale died in April while a Charlotte man drowned in June. The sheriff's office has responded to eight drownings at the lake since 2016.

Officials urge everyone to wear a life jacket when getting in the water.
