Ladybirds seize Big East golf title
BUNN — With Southern Nash senior Samantha Puckett and sophomore teammate Mackenzie Gamble battling it out for the individual conference championship, the Ladybirds picked up their 2-A/3-A Big East Conference title with a 75-shot win over runner-up Franklinton in the 18-hole finale Oct. 6 at The River Golf Course.
Southern Nash, which won all eight nine-hole conference matches, took the season crown by 466 strokes over the Red Rams. Northern Nash was third and Bunn was fourth to round out the schools with enough players for team scores.
With the team concern settled long ago, the real drama was for medalists. Gamble grabbed a seven-shot lead in an Oct. 4 match at Northgreen Country Club in Rocky Mount after being tied with Puckett through the first seven matches. Puckett won the battle two days later, shooting a 95 to edge Gamble by a stroke, but not enough to grab the season medalist achievement from the sophomore. It was the third time in the last five seasons that a Ladybird has taken conference player of the year.
The pair, along with teammates Jasmine Horrigan, Tabatha Tomaszewski and Mercedes Ledbetter, will compete in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3-A East Regional on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at Lockwood Folly Golf Course in Supply.
