STANHOPE — Savanna Baines hurled a five-inning no-hitter and struck out 10 as her Southern Nash High varsity girls softball team overwhelmed Rocky Mount 14-0 in five innings in the first round of the 2-A/3-A Big East Conference tournament Monday evening.
The regular-season champion Ladybirds led 5-0 before an eight-run outburst in the bottom of the third inning left them a run from a mercy-rule win. Southern Nash (17-2) will host fifth-seeded Franklinton in the semifinals Tuesday.
Addison Brumfield led the Ladybirds at the plate, going 3 for 3 with two doubles and three RBIs while Ariel Perry and Carlee Beckham each had two hits and drove in two runs.
