Ladybirds end season with loss to Franklinton

A win in regular-season play remained elusive for the Southern Nash High varsity volleyball team Thursday with a 25-19, 25-12, 25-20 loss to Franklinton.

Tabatha Tomaszewski had three kills, three aces and a pair of blocks for the Ladybirds, who dropped to 0-18 and 0-14 within the 2-A/3-A Big East Conference. Taylor Keen added two blocks, with Addison Brumfield leading the defense with an array of digs. Blumfield tacked on two kills, with Carlee Beckham adding three.

Franklinton clinched the outright Big East championship, finishing 11-3 overall and 12-8 against all opponents.

Southern Nash awaits an opponent in this week’s conference tournament.

Firebirds rout Rocky Mount for 12th straight win

ROCKY MOUNT — A trio of players scored two goals each for the Southern Nash varsity boys soccer team Oct. 13 as the 2-A Firebirds clinched at least a share of the 2-A/3-A Big East Conference championship with an 8-0 whipping of host Rocky Mount.

The win was the 12th straight for Southern Nash, which improved to 17-2-1 overall and 12-0 in Big East play.

Senior Raul Nunez netted two goals to go with a pair of assists while Jared Gonzalez and Frank Gonzalez each scored twice. Frank Gonzalez added an assist. Also scoring goals for the Firebirds were Jonathan Robles and Isidro Romero while Wilfran Sanchez, Ramiro Rangel and Erick Arroyo Soto each had an assist.

Freshman goalkeeper Alex Benitez made five saves in the shutout, the eighth for the Firebirds.

The Gryphons exited 7-8-2 overall and 5-5 in Big East matches.

Southern Nash was scheduled to host its final two regular-season matches Monday against Northern Nash and Wednesday versus Franklinton. Monday’s game was scheduled to start after The Enterprise’s press time.

Ladybirds battle Knights, but denied first win

A winless season continued for the Southern Nash varsity volleyball team Oct. 12, but not without a fight from the Ladybirds in a four-set loss at Northern Nash.

Southern Nash tumbled to 0-16 with its 12th straight defeat in 2-A/3-A Big East Conference matches with the 25-23, 25-20, 25-15 verdict. Carlee Beckham led the Ladybirds with seven kills while Taylor Keen had six kills, four aces and two blocks.

Firebirds close in on Big East crown

BUNN — Southern Nash moved closer to capturing the championship of the 2-A/3-A Big East Conference with an 8-1 victory Oct. 11 at Bunn High.

The Firebirds pushed their record to 16-2-1 overall and 11-0 in conference play with their 11th consecutive win. Southern Nash hasn’t lost since back-to-back defeats to open the season.

Sophomore Frank Gonzalez knocked in a pair of goals for the Firebirds, who got goals from seven players. Sophomore Gamliel Mendoza and junior Jonathan Robles each provided a goal and two assists while sophomore Jose Nunez, junior Kevin Dominguez and junior Isidro Romero each had a goal and an assist.

Senior Jared Gonzalez also scored one goal while Ramiro Rangel had an assist.

Bunn exited 5-5 overall and 5-4 in league matches.
