ROCKY MOUNT — Thursday's high school football game between Rocky Mount and Southern Nash will not only determine who remains in the running for a conference win, but also the victor in a friendly side wager between two notable graduates.

It's a gridiron battle of arch football rivals when Rocky Mount meets Southern Nash on Thursday night at Rocky Mount High School. To add more drama to the matchup, Mayor Sandy Roberson, a RMHS graduate, has placed a small wager on the game with N.C. Sen. Lisa
Barnes, a SNHS graduate.

If Roberson wins the challenge with the Gryphons coming out on top, Barnes will award him with a bushel of sweet potatoes, a southern Nash County staple. If Barnes wins, she will be
treated to dinner at her choice of one of the restaurants located at Rocky Mount Mills.

"I am confident in my Gryphons under the leadership of Coach Jones," Roberson said. "Both teams are 3-0 in conference play, so this game is very important."

The Gryphons defeated the Firebirds in their meeting last Spring.

"This is the year for the Firebirds to go all the way," Barnes said. “Coach Batchelor hasn't missed a beat so far in his inaugural season. I am looking forward to my free dinner."

The showdown is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at RMHS, rescheduled from Friday night.
