BUNN — After being nearly exclusively a ground offense for most of the season, the Southern Nash High varsity football team unveiled an aerial wrinkle Friday in a 42-14 bashing of Bunn.

The Firebirds rolled up their usual rushing largesse with 324 yards, but quarterback Brock Alford threw his first two touchdown passes this fall. Both scoring tosses went to senior Jackson Vick, who totaled 194 yards of offense.

The win left the 3-A Firebirds 6-0 overall and 3-0 and tied for first place with 3-A Northern Nash (6-1, 3-0) in the 2-A/3-A Big East Conference. The 2-A Wildcats departed winless in four league games and now stand at 2-5 overall.

Before Alford and Vick got their act going, junior Tralon Mitchell scored four touchdowns and ran for a team-high 124 yards on just seven carries. He scored on runs of 15, 11, 2 and 65 yards in the first half.

After his last TD, Wildcats QB Damarion Watkins fired his second TD pass, this one to Micah Evans for 34 yards that cut the Firebirds lead in half at 28-14 with just under two minutes in the half. But Bunn wouldn’t make it to halftime, as Alford and Vick hooked up on a 49-yard bomb for six points.

The duo combined again on a 27-yard scoring play in the third quarter.

Vick finished with 118 yards on 13 carries while Alford was 2 for 3 for 76 yards.

The game was marred by 225 yards on 27 penalties by both teams with the Firebirds getting flagged 14 times for 120 yards.

Southern Nash will visit Rocky Mount on Friday.
