ROCKY MOUNT — With the scheduled 2-A/3-A Big East Conference football showdown between Southern Nash and Rocky Mount moved up a day because of a teacher workday Friday, the Firebirds put in their work Thursday night.

Southern Nash’s 45-27 win left it atop the Big East at 4-0 while the Gryphons slunk back to 5-3 and 3-1. Northern Nash, the Firebirds’ opponent this week, kept pace to claim a share of first place in the conference with a 41-14 win over Franklinton on Friday.

Three Firebirds — seniors Jackson Vick and Sammy Gandy and junior Tralon Mitchell — surpassed the 100-yard plateau as Southern Nash piled up 417 yards of offense. Vick ran for 102 yards, including a six-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Vick snared a 40-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Brock Alford for the Firebirds’ first TD after Jonathan Daniels opened the scoring with a 31-yard field goal.

Senior fullback Dawson May rammed in a pair of 1-yard TD runs as the Firebirds built a 20-0 halftime lead.

Gandy, who finished with 108 yards on 10 carries, padded the Firebirds’ lead with a 19-yard TD scamper on the first possession of the third quarter. Mitchell finished Southern Nash’s scoring with a 41-yard run in the fourth quarter. He led the Firebirds with 135 yards on 15 rushes.

Rocky Mount got TD runs from Elijah Vick and Isaiah Silver before Deandre Silver ran back a Firebirds fumble for another TD. Stephon Jones hit Miracle Sinclair for a 28-yard TD pass in the final two mintues to cap the Gryphons’ scoring.
