NASHVILLE — Nash County saw nearly 500 new coronavirus cases in a single week this month.

From Sept. 7-13, the Nash County Health Department reported 490 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the county’s total count to 13,501 cases and 208 deaths since the pandemic began in March 2020, according to information provided by Jerome Garner, the health department’s public health education specialist and public information officer.

Thirty people were hospitalized for coronavirus at Nash UNC Health Care as of Sept. 14.

The number of Nash County residents vaccinated with at least one dose is 49,911, or 53% of the county’s population.

The Impact Center’s health and wellness center in Rocky Mount will offer a summer cash card incentive at its vaccination clinic planned from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday. National Guard troops will be on site to help with the free vaccinations.

The Edgecombe County Health Department encourages as many people as possible to attend. A $100 cash card incentive will be given a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.

No appointments are needed. People in need of the second dose can also attend the clinic.

The Edgecombe County Health Department is providing the cash cards. Edgecombe County has a vaccination rate of 38%.

Impact Center health and wellness center director Christy Arnold said the clinic’s goal is to encourage people to get the COVID-19 vaccine due to a surge in cases of the virus’ delta variant.

“People have been reluctant in the past to get the COVID-19 vaccine because of a lack of knowledge and misconceptions,” Arnold said. “Now, they’re seeing the vaccinations are working. We hope for another great turnout from our community.”

The Impact Center is located on the campus of Word Tabernacle Church, 821 Word Plaza, Rocky Mount.
