Child rape suspect arrested in Nash County

ROCKY MOUNT — Authorities found a fugitive accused of multiple child rapes working a in Nash County nursing home.

Christopher Gerald Cooper, 56, of Blueberry Lane in Greensboro, faces four counts of statutory sex offense with a child under 15, two counts of first-degree sex offense with a child and one count each of first-egree rape, first-degree statutory rape and taking indecent liberties with a child.

The State Bureau of Investigation Violent Criminal Apprehension Team contacted the Nash County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday about Cooper possibly hiding out in the area, said Chief Deputy Brandon Medina, public information officer for the Nash County Sheriff’s Office.

“Information passed on to investigators indicated Christopher Gerald Cooper was employed as a nursing assistant,” Medina said. “Nash County Sheriff’s Office investigators proceeded to The Carrolton of Nash located at 7369 Hunter Hill Road in Rocky Mount. Investigators were able to locate Christopher Gerald Cooper, verify his identity and place him in custody without incident.”

Deputies took Cooper to the magistrate’s office, where his first appearance in Nash County District Court was scheduled.

A judge set Cooper’s bond at $1 million. He remains in custody at the Nash County Detention Center.
