ROCKY MOUNT — Two ramps at the Interstate 95 and U.S. 64 interchange are closed this week.

The ramps will be closed until Thursday afternoon for scheduled bridge maintenance, said Andrew Barksdale, spokesman for the N.C. Department of Transportation.

The closures affect the U.S. 64 East ramp at Exit 464B to access I-95 North and the I-95 South ramp at Exit 138A to access U.S. 64 East.

“During the ramp closures, maintenance crews for the N.C. Department of Transportation will replace the metal expansion joints on the U.S. 64 East bridges,” Barksdale said. “Expansion joints provide a smoother ride and protect the girders supporting the driving deck. In this case, the expansion joints have neared the end of their useful life and have required an increasing amount of maintenance that causes temporary lane closures.”

Motorists are required to take the following temporary detours:

• For the U.S. 64 ramp, take Exit 464A to I-95 South, then Exit 132 to reverse and merge onto I-95 North.

• For the I-95 ramp, take Exit 138B onto U.S. 64 West, then Exit 463 to reverse and go eastbound.

Drivers should expect a longer commute with the detours, and they should be alert traveling near the work zone, Barksdale said.
