The sponsor of a state bill boosting penalties for corruption in North Carolina urges the governor to sign the measure into law.

"I encourage Gov. (Roy) Cooper to sign it as soon as possible," Sen. Lisa Barnes, R-Nash, said in a statement Tuesday. "This legislation addresses a need that clearly exists at a local level so that no government official is able to operate above the law without consequence in North Carolina. This bipartisan legislation was based on concerns uncovered by State Auditor Beth Wood. It will provide greater oversight for elected officials who owe their constituents transparency, integrity, and, most importantly, accountability giving reassurance to all North Carolinians."

The bill received outspoken bipartisan support from Wood, a Democrat, and State Treasurer Dale Folwell, a Republican.

The bill passed 42-6 in the Senate in May and 64-44 in the House on Monday.

Rep. James Gailliard, D-Nash, is one of only four House Democrats to approve the measure.

"As elected officials, we work for those we represent and owe the public responses to their grievances and clear reporting of our policies, processes, and expenditures," Gailliard said. "SB473 ensures this necessary level of accountability."

The proposed legislation now sits on Cooper's desk.

If signed by the governor, the law would create a new felony offense for public officials who benefit from their position.
