Snow falling recently at town hall in Spring Hope. Meteorologists call for 100% chance of rain with wintry mix Sunday.

Nash County emergency management officials have issued a winter storm alert for Sunday.

During the winter storm, county residents could see:

· Wind speeds of 13 – 21 mph.

· Wind Gusts of 25 - 32 mph.

· 1.42 inches of rain.

· 0.6 inches of snow.

· 0.03 inches of freezing rain.

A mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain is expected to begin late Saturday night and Saturday morning and continue through Sunday afternoon before changing to rain.

A brief period of wet snow is possible late Sunday night, according to the National Weather Service in Raleigh.

There is a slight chance of snow after 4 a.m., mixing with sleet after 5 a.m. Early Sunday will be mostly cloudy with a low around 28.

Northeast wind 5 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Snow, freezing rain and sleet is expected to fall before noon Sunday, then rain or freezing rain will fall between noon and 1 p.m., then rain after 1 p.m.

The high will be near 44. Wind chill values will be as low as 17. It will be breezy with a northeast wind 10 to 15 mph increasing to 16 to 21 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 33 mph.

Chance of precipitation is 100%. New ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible.

New snow and sleet accumulation of less than one inch possible. By Sunday night it will be likely to rain before midnight. Cloudy, then gradually becoming partly cloudy, with a low around 34. East wind 9 to 14 mph becoming southwest after midnight.

Winds could gust as high as 29 mph. Chance of precipitation becomes 70% by evening. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch are possible.

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, it will be mostly sunny with a high near 45. Southwest wind around 18 mph, with gusts as high as 37 mph.
