<p>Adapting a technology that&#x2019;s seen increased relevance during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Butner-Creedmoor News is using QR codes to share online exclusives with its readers. </p> <p>The modified barcodes that look like inkblots or crossword puzzle grids now appear with select stories to promote additional text, photo galleries and videos available on ButnerCreedmoorNews.com and to direct readers to content available exclusively online. </p> <p>Smartphones and tablets read QR codes through their built-in digital cameras. To scan a code, open the camera app on your mobile device, point the lens at the QR code and wait for a pop-up that will open your web browser and display the linked page. Subscribers whose usernames and passwords aren&#x2019;t saved in their mobile browsers will need to log in once the page is displayed. </p> <p>The codes serve as a bridge between the newspaper&#x2019;s print and online editions, helping readers find multimedia content and online extras with the ease of snapping a cellphone photo. </p> <p>Masahiro Hara invented the quick response code in 1994 as an inventory management tool for logistics company Denso Wave. The two-dimensional images can store more information than the Universal Product Code symbols known as barcodes that are commonly seen in supermarkets and stores. </p> <p>Package delivery services like UPS have long used QR codes for delivery tracking, with employees scanning each parcel upon arrival at processing and distribution locations.</p> <p>More recently, restaurants have used the codes to direct customers to online menus and contactless payment systems as a way to reduce the sharing of paper menus and reliance on hand-to-hand transactions in order to limit the spread of germs during the pandemic. </p> <p>In December, Hara told British newspaper The Guardian that he&#x2019;s proud to see his invention used to promote safety and he anticipates QR codes could be more widely used in health care, such as a means to provide patients with convenient access to medical records. </p> <p>USA Today began using QR codes on each section front of its print edition in 2012. <p>More front-line essential workers in Group 3 will be eligible for COVID-19 vaccinations starting Wednesday, Gov. Roy Cooper said.</p> <p>State officials say the announcement follows the Johnson &amp; Johnson one-shot vaccine&#x2019;s approval, which is expected to increase North Carolina&#x2019;s supply. </p> <p>&#x201C;The state and our providers continue to work extremely hard to get people vaccinated in a way that&#x2019;s fast and fair,&#x201D; Cooper said in a Tuesday news conference. &#x201C;The third vaccine and improving vaccine supply will help us get more people vaccinated more quickly. Our essential front-line workers have remained on the job throughout this pandemic, and I am grateful for their work.&#x201D;</p> <p>While there still isn&#x2019;t enough vaccine for everyone, state health officials say supply increases allowed providers to report that they&#x2019;re ready to expand access to additional Group 3 essential workers. </p> <p>Essential workers subset groups include public safety workers and employees in farming and agriculture, manufacturing, essential goods and transportation. </p> <p>State officials said some vaccine providers may not be ready to open to front line essential workers Wednesday if they are still experiencing high demand for vaccines in Groups 1, 2 and 3. </p> <p>Cooper also laid out a timeline for Group 4 vaccinations. Those who are at higher risk from COVID-19 due to underlying medical conditions will be eligible to receive the vaccine beginning March 24, along with people in certain congregate living settings. </p> <p>&#x201C;We are always happy to be able to expand to other groups because it means more immunity in the Wilson community,&#x201D; Wilson County Health Director Teresa Ellen said. &#x201C;We have seen a decline in the demand for those 65 and older and we have been very successful with vaccinating that group. In the days and weeks ahead, we will continue to be flexible and continue planning as we expand vaccinations. This is all a natural part of vaccinating our population, and we appreciate everyone&#x2019;s patience. As a reminder, other providers continue to come online to offer the vaccine, and citizens will need to check with those providers for availability.&#x201D;</p>

State opens vaccinations to some front-line workers

<p>WILMINGTON &mdash; A former prison official who worked at the federal complex in Butner was indicted on charges of bribery and smuggling contraband, prosecutors announced.</p>
<p>Casey Covington, 45, a correctional officer at the Federal Correctional Institution in Butner, is accused of conspiring with three inmates to smuggle in cell phones. He is also accused of accepting bribes in exchange for phones, marijuana, tobacco and alcohol.</p>
<p>A federal grand jury returned an indictment last week, charging Covington with bribery, conspiracy to introduce contraband into a Prison, and introducing contraband.</p>
<p>Covington lives in Cameron.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Contraband in prisons is one of the greatest threats to both inmates and correctional officers,&rdquo; stated Acting United States Attorney G. Norman Acker, III. &ldquo;This indictment seeks to hold a correctional officer who allegedly violated the trust of his peers by conspiring with inmates to introduce contraband to the prison. My office will always prosecute those who endanger lives and disrupt the good order and discipline within our correctional institutions.&rdquo;</p>
<p>According to the indictment, inmates Christopher Lee Davis, 36, Antonio Demond Byers, 40, and Robert Henry Huitt, 32, were also each charged with conspiring with Covington and possessing cell phones in prison.</p>
<p>If convicted, Covington faces 15 years in prison, and Davis, Byers, and Huitt each face up to 1 year in prison.</p>
<p>&ldquo;When correctional officers smuggle contraband into prisons, they jeopardize the safety of the very institutions they are charged with protecting. The OIG is committed to investigating this type of behavior,&rdquo; said Russell Cunningham, Special Agent in Charge of the Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General Washington Field Office.</p>
<p>The Department of Justice, Office of the Inspector General, is investigating the case and Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert J. Dodson is prosecuting the case.</p>
