CREEDMOOR — The winner of the final regular-season game between the Granville Central Panthers and South Granville Vikings last week would earn bragging rights for the next year.

Granville Central was looking for the signature win to end its season, but South Granville needed a victory to lock in a wild card spot in the playoffs.

The teams hit the field Thursday, April 8, with an offensive display that left most fans shaking their head, and South Granville claimed a 71-29 win over Granville Central.

The Panthers opened with a flea-flicker play for an 80-yard touchdown, only to have it called back for illegal touching. The Panthers couldn’t get a first down after that and had to punt to the Vikings.

Micah Wilkerson did the bulk of the work on the Viking’s first drive. Facing a fourth down with 7 yards to go, Wilkerson gave the Vikings a first down.

Traevon White burst through tacklers on the right side for a 27-yard touchdown run after that. Hunter Abbott blocked the extra point for the Panthers, but South Granville led 6-0.

The Vikings maintained that lead through the first quarter.

Granville Central looked poised to score in the second quarter with Nazir Garrett connecting with Kalvin Johnson on a 42-yard pass play, but the Vikings defense had other ideas.

Henry Daniel and Jaydon Crabtree kept a close eye on Garrett in the red zone and stopped the Panthers from scoring. South Granville took possession of the ball at the 16-yard line.

Starting quarterback Khawan Bobbitt tucked the ball in and dashed 62 yards on the quarterback keeper. Eventually, Wilkerson bounced off defenders and into the end zone. Wilkerson converted a 2-point play to extend South Granville’s lead to 14-0 in the second quarter.

Granville Central started its next drive at the 10-yard line. Garrett dropped back to take the snap and the ball sailed over his head. He scrambled to recover the ball in the end zone. Nehemiah Hunter tackled Garrett in the end zone for a safety, giving the Vikings 2 more points.

After a free kick, South Granville took over at the Granville Central 38-yard line. Four plays later, Wilkerson was breaking the plane again for the Vikings. Jackson Erwin made the extra point for a 23-0 Viking lead.

South Granville’s defense stopped Granville Central again and forced a punt. The ball didn’t travel too far on the kick.

Wilkerson needed one play to travel 22-yards for a touchdown. Erwin converted the extra point and the Vikings had a 30-0 lead.

Granville Central would not give up. Garrett connected with Isaiah Sasser on a huge 38-yard pass play, but Granville Central couldn’t move the ball and possession went back to the Vikings.

Wilkerson dropped back to pass, but was intercepted by Granville Central’s Jared Reed. South Granville’s Benjamin Hunt returned the favor on the next play by picking off a Garrett pass.

The half ended with South Granville up 30-0.

Offense stars after half

The second half was an offensive gem for both teams.

The Vikings had the ball first in the third quarter. Wilkerson dodged tacklers on a 30-yard touchdown run. Erwin was true with the extra point and the Vikings had a 37-0 lead.

The Panthers finally cracked the scoring column when Garrett found Reed open of a 64-yard touchdown pass play. Parker Aungst converted the extra point, but the Vikings still led 37-7.

The Vikings offense answered with Wilkerson scoring his fifth touchdown of the night on a 67-yard run up the middle. Erwin nailed the extra point and the score was 44-7.

Granville Central’s passing game was on the mark with Garrett connecting on a 58-yard pass to Kalvin Johnson. Garrett then found Abbott open for a 25-yard touchdown pass and run.

The Panthers trailed 44-13 after the run failed on the extra point attempt.

Sha’king Allah took the kickoff back to the 44-yard line and from there the Vikings went to work with Crabtree running the ball.

Fellow defensive back Daniel did the honors from 22 yards out and Erwin’s PAT put the Vikings ahead 51-13.

The Panthers continued to own the passing game with Garrett finding Johnson open for a 82-yard catch-and-run.

Garrett connected with Abbott from 8 yards out for a touchdown. The 2-point attempt was no good, but the Panthers inched closer at 51-19.

Daniel gave the Vikings good field position after taking the kickoff to the 46-yard line.

Crabtree carried the ball on this three-play drive. Crabtree dashed into the end zone from 41 yards out to give the Vikings a 57-19 lead. The Panthers blocked the extra point.

Garrett dropped back to pass for the Panthers and Crabtree grabbed a pick six for the Vikings. Crabtree returned the interception 28 yards for a touchdown. Erwin’s extra point was good and the Vikings had a 64-19 lead.

Granville Central continued to use the passing game to score. Garrett found Abbott open for a reception to set up the touchdown pass to Johnson. Garrett found Johnson streaking down the right sideline and put the ball on his fingertips. Johnson hauled in the pass for a 48-yard catch and run touchdown. Aungst made the extra point and the Panthers closed the gap to 64-26.

South Granville looked content to keep the ball on the ground to run time off of the clock. On third down, Allah waited for his blockers to open a hole and Allah took off toward the end zone on an 82-yard touchdown run.

Erwin added the extra point to give the Vikings a 71-26 lead.

The score would stand to move the Vikings to 5-2 on the season. Granville Central finished with a 1-5 record.

The Vikings will travel to Washington to face the Pam Pack in the opening round of the 2A playoffs. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. on Friday, April 16.
