CREEDMOOR — There was a lot riding on the outcome of the match between the Granville Central Lady Panthers and the South Granville Lady Vikings. South Granville had the opportunity capture the 2A portion of the Northern Lakes 3A/2A Conference championship and perhaps seal a bid to the state playoffs with a win.
The Lady Vikings had an opportunity to sweep Granville Central. But the most important aspect of the May 9 event was to send the seniors out with a win.
For seniors Haley Clement, Sadie Bowling and Layla Besaw, this was their night to shine and they did brightly.
Besaw had a stellar night with 10 saves in goal for South Granville. Clement played tough defense and often kept the ball moving away from the Granville Central players.
Bowling scored a goal off of a Madison Martinez-Molina assist to give South Granville a lead in the second half.
Maddie Yates took a pass from Martinez-Molina and scored the second goal of the night for the Lady Vikings.
Leading 2-0, South Granville needed to keep the ball away from the Lady Panthers. Ellie Bryan, Lina Chavez and Bethzy Diaz Segovia provided a tough line that Granville Central tried to break through.
The final whistle sounded and the Lady Vikings had captured the 2-0 win.
South Granville recognized Clement, Besaw and Bowling after the match.
Coach Jim Vasilko honored the late Grace Hunt, a 2021 graduate and former soccer player. Hunt was killed in a car crash earlier this year.
An emotional Vasilko had Hunt’s jersey at the field. He told the crowd how much Hunt had meant to the program.
South Granville finished the regular season with a 8-10 record and 8-4 in conference play.
The Lady Vikings claimed the 2A championship with the win.
