STEM — Granville Central wanted to send the four seniors — Austin Falls, Caleb Underwood, Mathew Pennington and Billy Blevins — out with a win. But that did not happen on May 5 as the Panthers hosted the Vikings from South Granville.
The Vikings walked away with a 4-0 win and the 2A Northern Lakes Conference title.
Granville Central looked poised to score in the first inning after Underwood’s double. Brendan Chamberlain reached base on an error that moved Underwood to third. Granville Central left Underwood stranded after Blevins hit into a fielder’s choice and Dylan Laws flew out to the shortstop.
South Granville put one run on the board in the top of the second inning. Charlie Vestal led off with a double and advanced on a single by Ricky Kern. Vestal scored and Kern moved to second on a ground out by Rafael Rodriguez.
Granville Central struggled to find any offense at the plate. South Granville managed to add a run in the top of the fourth inning.
Kern singled with one out and Rodriguez followed with a walk. Brett Freeland hit into a fielder’s choice that scored Kern for a 2-0 lead for the Vikings.
South Granville all but sealed the game with two runs in the fifth inning.
Trevor Hockaday doubled, Cooper Wilkins was hit by a pitch and Keith Gardner followed with a single. Vestal doubled to drive in Hockaday and Cooper for a 4-0 lead.
That score would stand as the Vikings defeated Granville Central 4-0.
Brett Freeland was the winning pitcher. He scattered three hits, struck out four batters and walked two Panthers.
