STEM — Granville Central picked up a huge 32-12 conference win over the visiting J.F. Webb Warriors on Friday night to give Wilbur Pender his first win as the Panthers coach.

Granville Central started its first drive at its own 32-yard line. The Panthers wasted no time pawing out yards with the running game.

Ryan Johnson, a 5 foot-6-inch 140-pound junior, found an opening on the left side for big gains. Johnson then ran over the right side with success and Panther first downs.

Nazir Garrett, the 5 foot-6-inch quarterback, ran the option with Kalvin Johnson rolling for a first down.

Back-to-back incomplete passes turned the ball over to Webb at the 22-yard line.

Josh Wilson did most of his damage from the running back position with shots up the middle.

Javon Bullock, Webb’s quarterback, broke free for a 20-yard gain to give Webb some breathing room.

The teams traded possession and Granville Central finally was able to score with Garrett connecting with Hunter Abbott in the corner of the end zone.

Parker Aungst converted the point after for the Panthers with just under four minutes to go in the first quarter.

Webb could not convert a first down and gave the ball back to the Panthers. Granville Central gave the ball right back to Webb when Jamarion Dunkins recovered a fumble.

Webb marched down the field and scored with a little over a minute remaining in the first quarter.

The extra point sailed wide left and the Panthers owned a 7-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

An unsportsmanlike penalty helped push the Panthers to the 7-yard line, but a fumble gave the ball back to Webb.

Four plays later, the Warriors punted the ball back to Granville Central.

Ryan Johnson chewed up chunks of yards on his way to the 4-yard line.

Garrett connected with Isaiah Sasser on a swing pass. Sasser stretched the ball over the goal line for a touchdown.

The extra point missed the mark to the left, but Granville Central had a 13-6 lead midway through the second quarter.

Webb responded immediately with Bullock connecting with Beau Burnette for a touchdown.

The extra point was no good for the Warriors. Webb trailed 13-12 with five minutes to go in the first half.

Granville Central used a mix of run and pass plays to move the ball to the red zone.

Garrett called his own number and scored. Granville Central tried the 2-point conversion, but Ikeem Hunt picked off the pass for the Warriors.

Granville Central had a 19-12 lead with 2:33 to go in the first half.

After a Webb punt, the Panthers went to work and Garrett found Kalvin Johnson open in the end zone for a touchdown with 30 seconds left. The extra point was again no good, but the Panthers carried a 25-12 lead into intermission.

Neither team could gain an advantage early in the third quarter.

After trading punts, the Warriors looked poised to move the ball, but a fumble shut down that drive.

Garrett found Abbott alone in the end zone for a 7-yard touchdown pass. Aungst made the extra point and the Panthers had a 32-12 lead.

Both teams continued to play hard despite a plethora of penalty flags flying.

Time slowly ticked off the clock and when the final horn sounded, the Panthers claimed victory over the Webb Warriors.

The Panthers moved to 1-0 on the season and Webb fell to 0-2.

No statistics were available at press time.

Granville Central travels to North Lenoir for a 7 p.m. kick on March 12.

Webb has a home contest against Louisburg at 6:30 p.m. that night.
