OXFORD — County Manager Michael Felts announced his resignation at the May 2 meeting of the Granville County Board of Commissioners. Felts submitted a 90-day notice with his last day of employment set for July 31. Felts has accepted a position with the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners Risk Management Pools.
In the coming days, the board of commissioners will determine the appropriate process to search for the next county manager. Details of this transition will be announced as they become available.
Felts was appointed County Manager in July 2013 following 11 years of service as Granville County’s finance director. Among other accomplishments during his tenure as manager, Felts spearheaded the county’s first long-range strategic plan and established a capital improvement program for county facilities to deal with current and expected growth to maintain a high level of service to county residents.
“Michael Felts has done so much for Granville County as a leader and dedicated public servant,” said Tony Cozart, chair of the board of county commissioners.
“He has guided our county staff with a steady hand and worked tirelessly to implement policies from this board in a diligent and professional manner. We are confident that Granville County has the staff in place to continue the success we have experienced during Felts’ tenure. On behalf of my fellow commissioners, I would like to wish him the best as he continues his career with the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners.”
Cozart went on to say, “I have witnessed Mr. Felts perform his duties as finance director and most recently as county manager. His ability to identify solutions, develop a strong team and maintain a visionary focus are truly exemplary. I personally and professionally regret that he is resigning as county manager. This is a tremendous loss for our county!””
For his part, Felts said, “I would like to thank the board of commissioners, county staff, and the citizens of Granville County for giving me the privilege of serving them as county manager and finance director.
“It has been an honor to serve this community and I am confident that Granville County is well-positioned for the years ahead thanks to the hard work and dedication of our staff and the steady and thoughtful leadership of our board of commissioners. I am proud of all the things we achieved as a team during my tenure. I know the next county manager will love collaborating with our fantastic staff, commissioners and residents just as much as I did.”
