CREEDMOOR — Traditionally, a school’s field day gives students a chance to get out of the classroom, play games and just have some fun as the school year draws to a close.

Last week, Falls Lake Academy took field day to a new level.

Wednesday, May 5, was an off day for students. So for field day, Falls Lake Academy’s faculty and staff put a spin on a familiar May event: the Kentucky Derby.

With all the fanfare of the true derby — an ice cream truck, outrageous hats, and spirited plastic ponies — many staff members lined up to join in several events of the Falls Lake derby.

The jockeys and their horses — large inflatable unicorns or hobbyhorses — lined up for a quick race before showing off their jumping skills. Alicia Guiton, the high school receptionist, provided commentary about the competitor’s skills.

In the deep stretch, the jockeys and horses had one last opportunity to perform a trick for the judges before the winners were awarded their ribbons.

The Falls Lake Academy Derby was held as part of an appreciation event for the faculty and staff. Those employees cheered with the announcement that they released for the remainder of the day.
