CREEDMOOR — A junior at Falls Lake Academy lost his life Monday in a crash, school officials said.

The N.C. State Highway Patrol in Wake County is investigating the crash, which also injured two other Falls Lake Academy students.

A Highway Patrol spokesman identified the student killed as Nathan George. The two injured students are Joshua Philpott and Joel Tidd.

Amy Hobgood, the school's director, said all three students are juniors.

"Falls Lake Academy is deeply saddened by the loss of one of our students and continues to hold the other two students in prayer as they continue in the healing process," Hobgood said Thursday.

The school is holding a vigil Thursday evening to honor all three students, Hobgood said. The vigil starts at 8:15 p.m. at the school's campus near Creedmoor.

George's funeral service will be Friday, she said.

The family is raising money for the funeral through GoFundMe.

"He was loved and adored by everyone he met," wrote Tracy George, the fundraiser organizer. "The world lost a star, and he will be missed dearly. His smile was infectious and he had a heart of gold. You could never be sad when he was around, because he made our lives better just by being in it."

The school on Facebook said it will accept donations for the family.

Crash was on Old Weaver Trail

The crash happened around 4:34 p.m. on Monday on Old Weaver Trail in Wake County, according to Sgt. Marcus Bethea with the Highway Patrol.

He said Tidd, 17, was driving east in a 2013 Audi A6 when he ran off the right side of the road and into several trees. After a preliminary investigation, troopers think speed was a factor in the crash, Bethea said.

Tidd, of Oxford, was taken to Wake Medical Center in serious but stable condition. George, 17, of Stem, was also taken to the hospital, where he later died. George was riding in the front seat.

Philpott, 16, of Creedmoor, was riding in the back seat. He was taken to Duke University Medical Center, where he is in serious condition.

Bethea said the investigation is ongoing. No charges have been filed. The Highway Patrol will work with the Wake County District Attorney's Office to determine if charges will be filed after the investigation ends, Bethea said.
