CREEDMOOR — Billy Fisher, chief of Creedmoor’s Volunteer Fire Department and Matt Foley, assistant chief, recommended that Creedmoor opt-out of the county’s proposed fire service districts at the May 3 commissioner’s meeting.
County Commissioners have yet to determine the amount that taxes will be raised to support the fire service district program.
Municipalities have the opportunity to participate in the program, which may lead to additional funding; however Fisher and Foley are concerned about the amount of funding Creedmoor will actually receive.
“It is our understanding that all of the money from the tax increase will be put in a pot and distributed from there,” Fisher said.
Foley was concerned that the southern end of the county will be footing a huge part of the tax revenue, but not receive what is needed to support the stations.
The duo suggested that Creedmoor may be better off increasing its tax rate and designating that for the fire department.
Fisher said that regardless of what happens that the city has to have a contract with the fire department and then they can talk about funding.
The board discussed separating the agreement and funding of the city hall expansion and building a police station. The two were tied together in the first proposal.
Commissioner Kicinski said the board needed to focus on getting the police station built and then worry about what would be required to renovate or expand city hall.
Kicinski volunteered to attend the Upper Neuse River Basin Association meetings until the board can review meeting assignments.
Rachel Renbarger’s application to join the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Advisory Board was unanimously approved. The DEI Board has several openings and encourages Creedmoor residents to apply for a position on the board.
Commissioners heard a presentation on job classification and pay study to determine where Creedmoor falls in regard to pay scale and recruitment and retention.
The board also had a brief review of understanding an audit and financial report.
Commissioners took no action on either presentation.
The board has a scheduled budget workshop at 6 p.m. on May 16.
