Outgoing Granville County Board of Commissioners Chair David T. Smith was honored with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine on Monday in a surprise presentation. “It truly was a surprise and an honor,” Smith said. “It has been my honor and privilege to work and serve the people of Granville County.” The Order of the Long Leaf Pine is North Carolina’s highest civilian honor issued by the governor. Smith served as chairman of the Board of Commissioners from December 2019 until this week, when Commissioner Sue Hinman was elected the next chair. Smith previously served as sheriff.
