N.C. Hot Sauce Contest

The city of Oxford will have its 15th annual Hot Sauce Contest & Festival on Saturday, Sept. 11 in downtown Oxford.

Book signing

Granville County author Lewis Bowling will be available to sign copies of the commemorative 275th Anniversary book “Looking Back: 275 Years of Granville County History” during the annual Hot Sauce Contest in downtown Oxford.

The book signing will be held from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Sept. 11 at the Granville County Historical Society Museum and is planned in conjunction with the Museum’s 275th Anniversary Exhibit, now on display at the Harris Exhibit Hall, 1 Museum Lane, Oxford.

Book sale

The Friends of the Library has canceled its book sale on Saturday, Sept. 11, due to the rise of COVID-19 infections in the community.

Future book sales are planned from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Nov. 13 and on Dec. 11.

Friends of the Library members in 2019 and 2020 have valid membership through the end of 2021. The group will hold a membership drive in the fall.

Train depot interest meeting

The Granville County Historical Society is looking into the possibility of acquiring the old Seaboard Train Depot in Creedmoor and considering it a community project to discuss making it happen.

A second grassroots interest meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept.14, at Butner City Hall, 415 Central Ave. Community member, train enthusiasts, civic organizations and business are invited.

Animal shelter closures

Granville County Animal Services will be holding staff development training each month on the third Wednesday, and the animal shelter will be closed to the public during training days. Future dates are Sept. 15, Oct. 20, Nov. 17 and Dec. 15. The new Granville County Animal Shelter is at 515 New Commerce Drive in Oxford and can be reached at 919-693-6749.

School’s Out: Game Day

Granville County Public Schools are closed Friday, Sept. 17, for a teacher work day. The Creedmoor Community Center, 116 Douglas Drive, will host a Game Day for children 6 and older featuring a Nintendo Switch, ping-pong tables, board games and gym activities. The event is free for Creedmoor Community Center members and $5 for nonmembers.

Adult supervision is required for children 12 and under.

Moonlight pedal boat rentals

Multiple 45-minute paddle boat rental sessions are available during the nearly full moon on Friday, Sept. 17 at Lake Rogers Park i Creedmoor. Two- or four-person boats are available for $10 ($13 for non-Creedmoor residents) at 7, 7:45 and 8:30 p.m.

Golf tournament

The Granville County Chamber of Commerce is hosting its eighth annual golf tournament Tuesday, Sept. 21, at Kerr Lake Country Club, 600 Hedrick Drive Drive, Henderson.

Registration will begin at noon, with a boxed lunch provided, and a shotgun start will take place at 1 p.m. There will be contests for a 50/50 raffle, closest to the pin challenge, longest drive and hole-in-one shootout.

‘Spill the Tea’

The Creedmoor Business Center will launch its 2021 Lunch and Learn virtual series at 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 21 with “Spill the Tea.” Lisa Harrison, public health director at Granville Vance Public Health, and Wanda Boone, TRY executive director, will talk about “Health and wellbeing in the workplace.”

Local, state and national presenters will discuss facts and figures to promote startup and sustainability for small businesses every third Tuesday.

Relay for Life

Relay for Life is back on track for the 2021 fundraising season to support the American Cancer Society and cancer research.

Relay for Life will have its Granville County team captains meetings at 5:30 p.m. at the Granville County Expo & Convention Center on Sept. 28. Captains should attend and bring fundraising details.

The countywide Relay for Life event will be Friday, Oct. 1, from 6-10 p.m. at the Granville Athletic Park, with teams, games and food trucks.

A letter with information about the countywide event was mailed out in mid-August to local supporters. Anyone who has not gotten the mailing can contact Stacy at 919-339-3354 or cindysjoy107@gmail.com.

Fireman’s Day fundraiser and parade

Creedmoor Volunteer Fire Department will be holding its annual Fireman’s Day fundraiser and celebration Oct. 9.

There will be a parade held on Main Street at 1 p.m. and a Brunswick stew sale to follow.

Due to selling out so quickly last year, Creedmoor will be taking prepaid orders starting 8 a.m. Sept. 7 through 6 p.m. Sept. 21. The stew is $8 per quart.

Purchase at https://creedmoor-volunteer-fire-department.square.site, at the Fire Station dropbox on the Lyon Street side of the station, or by paying to any firefighter. In-person payments should include an envelope with your name, phone number, email address, number of quarts and a check or cash. Confirmation will be sent by email.

There will be limited stew for sale after the parade, as well as “I Support CVFD” T-shirts for $20. Donations and support are welcomed.

Creedmoor Farmers Market

The Creedmoor Farmers Market will be open Wednesday from 1-5 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the American Legion building, 50 Legion St., Creedmoor. The season runs through Nov. 25.

The market has available vegetables, plants, flowers, baked goods, pine furniture, arts and crafts. Vendors who sell all homemade or self-grown items can participate. Call 919-528-1767 for more information.

Thank a Vet

The “Thank A Vet” program provides discounts when shopping at local businesses and service providers. This free service is available through the Granville County Register of Deeds office, where an ID card is issued that can be used for veterans who register, or have already registered, their DD-214 forms.

Families Living Violence Free can help Granville County residents with help filing a domestic violence protective order. Call 919-693-3579 to speak with an advocate who can help with planning and completing the order. Callers can also apply for free legal representation.

Community Treasure Chest

Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church in Creedmoor welcomes all to its Community Treasure Chest facility filled with new to used clothes and shoes of all sizes and household goods. Coats, dresses, pants, suits, tops, blankets and other items are available in men’s and women’s sizes. All items are free.
