Woods’ jumper sends Bulldogs past Pfeiffer



MISENHEIMER — The Barton College men’s basketball team rallied to remain in a tie for first place in NCAA Divsion II Conference Carolinas with a 106-103 victory over Pfeiffer University on Tuesday night.

Down 87-77 with 9 minutes, 46 seconds left in the second half, the Bulldogs rallied and eventually took the lead at 96-95 on a pair of Dominique Byrd free throws with 2:21 left.



The lead would then exchange hands six times before a jump shot by Matt Woods with 3 seconds left put Barton up for good at 105-103.

Josh Calhoun then turned the ball over for Pfeiffer with 1 second left, forcing teammate Sae’Quahn Rogers to foul Byrd, who sank 1 of 2 at the line for the final margin.

The Southeast Region No. 7-ranked Bulldogs improved to 13-5 overall and 8-2 within Conference Carolinas play and remained tied with King (Tennessee) University for first place. The Tornado beat Emmanuel (Georgia) College 80-75 to keep pace with Barton. The Lions and Lees-McRae College, a 67-66 loser to Erskine (South Carolina) College, each dropped to 7-3 in CC play.

Jake Veasley paced Barton’s top offensive production of the year with 25 points, including 8-of-10 shooting at the line. Byrd hit 15 of 18 at the line en route to scoring 19 points. Barton as a team hit 33 of 43 free throws (76.7 percent).

Woods (15) and R.J. Claypool (13) also reached double digits for the Bulldogs.

De’Vonte Jenkins led Pfeiffer with a game-high 26 points on 10-of-16 shooting. Mike Smith had 24 points for the Falcons, while Josh Calhoun chipped in 18 and Silvere Aluko 14.

Barton will start a three-game homestand with a Friday night contest inside Wilson Gym against Limestone (South Carolina) College at 7:30. On Saturday, the Bulldogs host North Greenville University at 4 p.m., before welcoming archrival University of Mount Olive on Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m.
